Acupuncture is one of the most regularly used medical practices in the world. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is part of a complex Chinese medical system and is the basis of acupuncture treatment. The goal of acupuncture treatment is to promote, enhance, and restore the healing response of the human body and mind.
Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, but has really only become accepted in the United States over the last thirty years. The actual treatment process will stimulate specific anatomical points on the body. Through this stimulation, channels of energy are influenced throughout the body. These energy channels are called meridians. Any pain, tension, or dysfunction within the human body can disrupt this smooth flow of energy within the body. The goal of acupuncture is to free any blockage sitting inside the human body and to restore balance and harmony to the body and mind.
The needles used in acupuncture treatments stimulate the nervous system and release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones, which can influence the body’s own internal regulatory system. By changing the energy levels in the body through acupuncture treatment, the natural healing of the body can start to take place.
What problems can acupuncture treat?
Because acupuncture treats the entire human body, it can treat many conditions. Many people think that acupuncture is only used to treat pain. While acupuncture treatment can be used for pain, it treats far more conditions. Some of the common conditions treated by acupuncture are: allergies, asthma, digestive disorders, headaches, respiratory disorders, depression, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, sexual dysfunction, anxiety, insomnia, gynecologic and obstetric issues, musculoskeletal and neurologic problems, including acute and chronic pain. Additionally, acupuncture treatment has also been known for treating problems related to tension, stress, and certain emotional conditions.
What’s a normal treatment like?
When acupuncture treatment is performed by a trained professional, a vast majority of patients feel only minimal pain as the needles are inserted. After the initial insertion, the needles do not hurt. The needles that are used by trained professionals are FDA approved, sterile and single use only. The number of treatments depends totally on the individual symptoms and varies from patient to patient. The more chronic the problem, the more treatments are required.
Is acupuncture safe?
When under the care of a trained professional, acupuncture is extremely safe. There have been relatively few reports of complications over the past thirty years in the United States.
What is my next step for acupuncture treatment?
It is extremely important to visit a qualified professional who has the skill set to apply acupuncture treatment. Medical acupuncturists are physicians who have completed a formal acupuncture training program and successfully completed the examination requirements of the medical boards of their respective states. At SouthEast Chiropractic: The Motion Centers, we have qualified physicians to implement acupuncture treatment. Dr. Crown Hoffman performs acupuncture treatments at our Gastonia location.
