What is Holistic Medicine, and Why Does it Matter?

With each passing year and every new generation, we learn more about the science behind our health and how our bodies function.  We find medicines and cures for diseases, and we learn that some of the things we once thought were harmless are not so great for us after all.  Back in the 30s, 40s, and even 50s, tobacco ads used physicians to sell their products.  Yes, doctors actually promoted the use of cigarettes and raved about which brands did not lead to “throat irritation.”  Of course, we know better now.  There is undeniable proof that cigarette smoke, both first and second-hand, leads to a host of health problems, most notably lung cancer.

So, the question is what are we doing to our bodies now that will be devastating in the future?  With each new medication, supplement, diet fad, and trend we have to wonder if there will be unwanted consequences down the road.  Between the years of 2004-2012, the FDA issued 465 total Class I recalls, meaning “there is a reasonable probability that the use or exposure…will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”  The bottom line is that simply because a drug has gained FDA approval and made it onto our store shelves does not mean that it is safe.  Listening to any medication commercial with the laundry list of potential side effects is proof enough of that.  So, what are we to do?

What is Holistic Medicine?

Holistic medicine is defined as, “the art and science of healing that addresses care of the whole person – body, mind, and spirit.” Unlike medications which are used to treat one condition with the potential to harmfully affect other areas of the body, holistic medicine views and treats the body as one complete organism, rather than in silos.  When our total wellbeing is addressed, healing can occur naturally through the creation of a proper balance.  For example, when nutrition is improved, so too is mental state, energy, and a multitude of bodily functions.  With this in mind, chiropractors seek to treat far more than just back pain.  Instead, the goal is to provide full body healing.  This may be accomplished through a few different services, including:

  • Adjustments
  • Acupuncture
  • Massage
  • Nutritional Guidance
  • Lifestyle Changes
  • Exercise Recommendations

When these are all combined, the body is able to function at an optimal level, as each component is able to perform the task needed without interference.  Very rarely is pain or any other health condition a stand-alone problem.  Rather than simply treating the symptom, it is important to find and address the underlying cause.  Only then will a patient be able to experience true relief.

The simple fact is that we just don’t know how the medicines we take today may affect us tomorrow.  Just as tobacco was once believed to be relatively harmless, there are undoubtedly products and treatment options currently in use that will later be found to be detrimental.  Holistic medicine offers alternative treatment that is known to be safe and typically found to be quite effective.  While there are many cases in which modern medicine is both necessary and valuable, it should not be trusted blindly for all conditions.  In many situations, although a pill may be easier, alternative medicine provides the solution without the potentially harmful consequences.
